Texas Ponzi schemer fails to obtain bail

August 12th, 2010 · No Comments

Allen Stanford, the Texas financier charged with leading a $7 billion Ponzi scheme, has lost his third attempt at having bail set for him to be released from jail.  Standford has been in jail for 14 months and feels that he needs to be released in order to prepare with his lawyer for his upcoming trial.  He argued that he needs to be working with his lawyer for 12 hours a day, seven days a week in order to be prepared for trial.

However, U.S. District Judge Nancy Atlas in Houston refused his request for bail.  Stanford has said that he will repeal the ruling to the U.S. Fifth Court of Appeals.  The court has already rejected two of his previous appeals for bail.

Stanford’s criminal trial is set for January 24th, 2011.

State jails scrutinized

July 7th, 2010 · No Comments

The chairman of the Texas House of Corrections is speaking out about his belief that the Texas state jail system is becoming less useful.  Supposedly, the state jails’ recidivism rates for inmates are considerably higher than other Texas prisons.

The state jails system was created in 1993 for nonviolent criminals, such as first-time offenders, drug offenders, and thieves.  They include individual housing and and rehabilitation programs.

John Whitmire, author of the state jail law and Senate Criminal Justice Committee Chairman, believes that the system has worked well and wants it to continue.

Crime rates lower in border states

June 9th, 2010 · No Comments

Contrary to popular belief, studies show that crime rates in border states are lower than states not along the U.S./Mexico border.

The top four lowest crime rate big cities in the U.S. are all in border states- Austin, San Diego, Phoenix, and El Paso.

An Associated Press study shows that 11 percent of big city law enforcement officers were assaulted in 2009, while only 3 percent of border patrol officials were assaulted.  Furthermore, attacks on border patrol officers mostly consisted of rocks being thrown at them, while it is not uncommon for inner-city law enforcement officers to be threatened with knives and guns.

April 19th, 2010 · No Comments

Austin police have arrested a man who is suspected of shooting a woman and a police officer in Round Rock County.

According to a release by the Round Rock Police Department, Kenneth Wade Davis was found in an undeveloped area of the city. Police would not release any further information, including the identity of the officer and the woman who were shot Friday or the nature of Davis’ injuries.

An official account of the incident, given friday, says an unidentified Texas Department of Public Safety trooper, who had found the woman badly beaten at Parmer Lane, had escorted her to her home Friday morning to collect her belongings, was at the house at the time the shooting occurred. A spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety in Austin, Heather Meisetschlager, said Saturday that “our officers did not fire at all.”

Court records show that Davis has been arrested twice recently on criminal trespass charges at the home where the shooting took place.
